Chinese Hospital Unveils Charles Huang Outpatient Tower, Celebrating Lasting Impact of Transformational $7 Million Gift

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Chinese Hospital proudly announces the official unveiling of the Charles Huang Outpatient Tower, commemorating the lasting impact of a transformational $7 million gift from the Charles Huang Foundation made four years ago.

Brown, Jr., Former Mayor of San Francisco; Zhang Jianmin, Consul General of the People's Republic of China in San Francisco; and Dr. Jian Zhang, Former CEO of Chinese Hospital.

The Unveiling Ceremony marks a significant milestone and honors the vision and generosity of Dr. Charles Huang, Chairman of a multi-billion dollar private equity company and founder of the Charles Huang Foundation. His gift, made in 2020, was the foundation’s first major charitable contribution in the United States and reflects a deep commitment to expanding access to quality healthcare, particularly for the Chinese community, new immigrants, and underserved populations.

Originally dedicated to the redevelopment of the hospital’s 1979 Building, the gift enabled the comprehensive modernization of the six-story outpatient tower, including critical infrastructure and a complete upgrade of its electrical backbone. Today, the newly named Charles Huang Outpatient Tower stands as a powerful symbol of that vision realized and reflects both a transformed facility and expanded care for the community.

As San Francisco’s last independent community hospital, Chinese Hospital continues to play a vital role in addressing critical gaps in care. The redevelopment has significantly strengthened its capabilities, enhancing the patient experience and strengthening the hospital’s ability to meet the growing healthcare needs of all San Franciscans while improving its readiness to respond to future public health challenges.

“Chinese Hospital has long been a trusted pillar of care for the community,” said Dr. Charles Huang, Founder and Chairman of the Charles Huang Foundation. “By supporting the redevelopment of the 1979 building and strengthening its core infrastructure, we hope to help ensure that this vital institution continues to expand its capabilities and provide high-quality, compassionate care for generations to come.”

“At the Charles Huang Foundation, we believe that lasting impact begins with strengthening the foundations of trusted community institutions,” said Lina Tullberg, CEO of the Charles Huang Foundation. “By investing in the modernization of core infrastructure, we are supporting Chinese Hospital’s continued growth and its ability to serve the community for generations to come.”

Dr. Jian Zhang, former CEO of Chinese Hospital and Co-Chair of the Fund Development Committee, together with fellow Co-Chair and former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr., emphasized that the donation came at one of the most challenging moments in the hospital’s history — during the COVID-19 pandemic and amid rising anti-Asian hate incidents. Speaking at the press conference, they highlighted that the hospital’s critical infrastructure improvement projects would not have been possible without the transformational support of philanthropist and entrepreneur Dr. Charles Huang. They noted that contributions of this magnitude are essential to strengthening Chinese Hospital’s long-term sustainability.

“We are deeply grateful to the Charles Huang Foundation for their exceptional gift, which made this transformation possible,” said Michael Chung, CEO of Chinese Hospital. “This partnership has enabled us to expand much-needed services and strengthen our ability to care for our community today and into the future.”

“We sincerely appreciate Dr. Huang’s generosity,” said Dr. Roger Eng, Chair of the Board of Trustees. “He chose Chinese Hospital because of our long-standing commitment to serving those most in need. Naming the tower in his honor recognizes his extraordinary contribution and reinforces our commitment to continue serving as a community hospital, providing high quality, culturally appropriate care to those we serve.”

The Unveiling Ceremony brings together hospital board members, leadership, elected officials, community leaders, and partners to celebrate this milestone and recognize the enduring impact of the Charles Huang Foundation’s philanthropy and commitment to advancing community health.
